Chapter 11

“What?” I jerked to a stop, pulled my hand from Matt’s, and stared up at him. “What kind of question is that?”

“An honest one. Because I don’t know for sure.”

“Of course, I do.” I glanced around, hoping no one was in earshot, and lowered my voice. “How could you ask that? We’ve been lovers for years. You know I like sleeping with you.”

“I know you like sleeping with me,” he echoed my words. “Curling up with your head on my shoulder and my arm around you, or lying on your side with me spooning you from behind. Drifting into sleep together. Waking together and getting ready for a new day. But I don’t know about the sex part. You’re so ... quiet.”

My eyebrows flew up. “Quiet? You want a girl who screams? Matt, half the time we’re at my house with my parents just upstairs.”

“And half the time we’re in my apartment where no one can hear us.”

I shook my head in disbelief. “You aren’t seriously saying you want me to scream like a, a ...”

“A woman who’s having an earth-shaking orgasm?”

My mouth fell open and heat surged to my cheeks. I was glad of the darkness that would hide my flush. I turned away from him and began to walk again. Under my breath, I said, “I have orgasms. Can we not talk about this here?”

“Where, then? Back in the cabin? With our two separate beds?”

Or not at all. I wasn’t as uninhibited as my sisters, who for the past week had been discussing the places they’d had sex and their guys’ techniques. Still, those girl-talk sessions were one of the things that had made me realize something was lacking for me, with Matt. Or maybe it was just lacking in me.

To be fair to both of us, I had to have the guts to discuss this.

We were walking past a statue of a man and woman seated side by side, a sense of intimacy between them. “Let’s sit,” I suggested.

We found a bench facing the ocean, with our backs to the town and the people strolling by. Deliberately, I sat with a couple of inches of space separating us. I didn’t touch Matt or look at him when I said in a low voice, “I enjoy sex with you. But to be completely honest, I’m not sure I’m a very sexy woman.”

After a moment, he said, “When we hit our teens, you were shy about sex. I respected that.” I heard him swallow. “I tried not to push you, to take things at a pace you were comfortable with, but ... are you saying it’s never been really good for you?” Pain edged his voice.

“Good? Yes, of course. But ... Matt, be honest. Has it been great for you? Like, rock your world great?” Like in the romantic movies I loved? “So great that it completely satisfied you? That you never looked at another girl and, you know, lusted after her and wondered what it’d be like to have sex with her?”

“Sure, I look at other girls.
